A trend is taking over the airwaves. A certain musical pattern has been found in the hits of artists like Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, Carly Rae Jepsen, and more. And once a music lover hears this so-called millennial whoop, there’s no chance of ever unhearing it.
The website The Patterning describes this phenomenon as “the melodic alternation between the fifth and the third note.” It is usually heard from when a singer sings “whoa” or “yeah.” To be honest, this musical trope can go past my ears. However, those who have enjoyed the music of earlier decades can’t stand this pattern that may sound like whining to them.
I guess it’s alright to say that the millennial whoop is the sound of this generation. Along with Snapchat, the word “bae”, and the Kardashians, this kind of music will serve as this generation’s pop culture contributions in the decades to come.
Come to think of it, just like the techno-disco of the 80’s and bubblegum pop of the 90’s, this trend will soon come to pass. As a music fan, I’m curious what the next hit trope will be.
